Tacking Back

This weekend we went out to a nearby lake and took care of the first goal on my list for April

I got some windsurfing in. I actually managed to get up on my board, sailed out into the lake, and managed to make it back. Well. Mostly. I overshot where I started by about 25 yards. But dammit this time I did not have to be rescued from the middle of the lake.

John and Cooper came along for some moral support and camping.

And Cooper even got in a little swimming. Which is a big deal as big bodies of water have always scared him. This weekend was no different but John was determined to get him swimming.

All in all a great weekend.

Best Advice Ever

Since I moved back to Texas, my dad and I have a tradition of going to the Texas Rangers opening day. I love this tradition for several reasons.

1. Spending a (usually) gorgeous spring afternoon at the ballpark instead of at my desk in the office

B. Baseball

5. An afternoon with my dad

I get to see my parents often since we live relatively close to each other. But it's rare to get to spend time one-on-one with them. So I really value those afternoons with my dad. And not just because of the baseball or when he buys lunch. But because we end up having a deeper conversation than we usually do since it's just the two of us.

Two plus years ago in the months of planning leading up to W Day, people were always giving me advice on what they thought made a successful marriage. (Pro tip: People love to give advice even if you didn't ask for it. Best way to get of those awkward situations is to take off your shoe and throw it at them. But then you might get arrested. So next best way is to smile and say thank you.) (Hint: Just because you're given advice doesn't mean you have to take it. Took me a long time to learn that gem.) (Like now you can ignore me and throw shoes at people giving you unwanted advice.) (Hey! Put down that shoe!) Where was I? Oh yeah. Marriage advice.

So two years ago at opening day when I was just weeks away from getting married, I sought some advice. I asked my dad what he thought made his and my mom's marriage so successful (they'll be married 34 years this summer).

I can't remember exactly what he said, but the crux of his message was to keep the marriage and what happens in the marriage between the two people who are married. The more I thought about it the more I realized how much wisdom there is in that.

Marriage is hard enough. It's a verb. Something you have to do and commit to every day. So why bring other people into it? That just adds a whole new level of complexity that is completely unnecessary.

Best. Marriage. Advice. Ever.

That is one piece of advice I did take.

Book Review: Mudbound

Book Review - Mudbound by Hillary Jordan

Mudbound is about prejudice and the many forms it takes on a Mississippi farm in 1946. Narrated by six characters, this book follows two families as each has a member return from World War II changed from what he saw in Europe. The friendship that grows between these two men is the catalyst that spurs the dramatic ending.

I knew nothing about this book before I read it. I literally picked it off a shelf of books in the store, read the back and thought it sounded interesting. I had heard no one talking about it. Which is a shame because it was amazing.

The writing was rich with imagery. It was no stretch to picture the muddy farm, the characters and the circumstances.

The story itself felt very true to the time. That it very well could have been a nonfiction book rather than fiction. It is not a feel good story. Where The Help was hopeful in the potential for change, Mudbound was raw, gritty and honest about how a black man who didn't behave according to the unspoken rules of Mississippi in the 1940s was treated.

Best book I've reviewed this year.

Disclosure: No one paid me in any way, form or fashion for this review.

Watch Yo Head

Back when John and I first started dating and we only saw each other a few times a week, we often talked on the phone at the end of the day. I was usually the one to actually make the call as John is not much of a phone talker.

So the day he called me mid-morning while at work, I knew something was wrong before I even picked up the phone. It had turned out that he had been laid off . So when he called me this last Valentine's Day once again in the morning I knew something had happened. My stomach dropped as I answered. Thankfully this call wasn't as big a deal (thank you sweet grilled cheebus).

He had been rear ended, but he was okay. The car had some damage but was drivable. But the best news was that the other driver had insurance. He went home from work that afternoon as he didn't feel well. But other than that he was fine, so we weren't too concerned.

And then we flew to Chicago.

The first morning we were there, John woke up acting a little goofy and his speech jumbled a little. I had assumed his blood sugar was low as that's how he tends to get in those situations. So I gave him Gatorade. But his speech continued to be jumbled. Not the whole sentence just a word here and there. He confused shirt and shorts and couldn't remember the word shampoo. And he had trouble remembering the names of his extended family, details about where he worked, etc. This went on for a few hours. And then he was back to normal.

I had no idea what was going on. My overactive imagination was in hyperdrive coming up with way too many worst case scenarios. I was terrified. At what was going on. At what would possibly happen. But thankfully he did get better and as soon as we got home, I sent him to the doctor's office. And there's been no trouble since.

After several weeks of doctor appointments (one with our gp and one with a neurologist), CT scan and EEG, the conclusion reached is a concussion from the accident in combination with the flight caused the memory loss.

The tests came back normal, and the doctors weren't concerned. So things are back to their regularly scheduled programs, and I'm no longer panicking and imagining the worst.

But if he ever hits his head again, I will be paying very close attention to his speech.

Last month I let go of what I could. I wasn't always great about it. Because let's face it. I'm me. And sometimes I just can't let something go. But I did manage to not focus so much on what I can't control. There's only so much time in this life, and spending any of it stressing over something in which I have no control is just wasting it. So this month I focused more on what I could.

I did not keep up with throwing out something every day, but the days I did, I threw out more than one thing. Which to me is just as good.

But the big question is the bathroom cabinets. Did I finish painting them? Indeed I did. It came down to the wire as I was putting the final coat on them Saturday afternoon. But paint them I did. I don't have pictures because I haven't hung them back up yet. What? My goal was to paint them in March. Not to have them painted and hung back up.

Three for three. Pretty damn proud of myself this month.

With the bathroom cabinets painted, I at first had trouble thinking about what to make my goal for April. But I've since come up with a few things.

  1. Take my rig to a lake and get some windsurfing in.
  2.  Try out The Bar Method.
  3. Prep the three bathroom doors for painting. (And maybe paint them.)
