Month 4 Day 31

It's that time again my friends. Time for Daily Photo Month to come to an end. And I am glad for it. I always start these months off so excited about the photo possibilities. And by the end when I'm grasping for pic ideas, I've lost all of that energy. I don't know how some people do it every day. But I did enjoy it and hope you did too.

And with that, here's what is quite possibly one of the last pictures of me and DF as an unwed couple.

Hump Day Humor: Chat Roulette Piano

Chat Roulette is this new web site - well new to me, though I've yet to try it - where you can chat with random strangers. This guy did improv with a piano based on all the people he was connected to.

ANSWER - Tuesday Trivia: Easter

During whose presidency did the Easter Egg Roll begin?

James Madison (1809-1817) at the suggestion of his wife, Dolley Madison. Mrs. Madison was fascinated to learn that Egyptian children rolled colored eggs on the site of the Pyramids. She thought the children of the Washington area would enjoy this enchanting activity.

LOST S6ep10

Camp UnLocke
What or who was taking surveillance of Kate and Sawyer? Jin decides to run off into the jungle to find Sun only to get taken down by darts and then taken away by Zoe and her crew. MIB/UnLocke/Smokey comes back and man is he pissed. He starts waking people up and recruits Sayid to go after Jin with him. But not before he basically tells Claire that after Kate has fulfilled her purpose she has his blessing and permission to do whatever she wants to make sure Kate doesn't get off the Island again. MIB/UnLocke/Smokey arrives on Widmore's beach and declares war.

Camp Widmore
Jin wakes up in Room 23 (remember back in Season 3 when Sawyer and Kate rescued Karl from Room 23 for Alex?). Zoe requests Jin's help in deciphering some Dharma maps as they have his name on them. He in turn demands to talk to Widmore. Widmore shows Jin a camera with pictures of his daughter and appeals to his fathery nature to help him keep MIB/UnLocke/Smokey from getting off the Island. And they walk off arm in arm to see The Package, who turns out is Desmond! (Hiya Brutha!) And Desmond while doped up on something sees Sayid in the water who was sent by MIB/UnLocke/Smokey to find out what was behind the locked door. That scene was pretty creepy actually.

Camp Ilana

Jack tells Sun about the Lighthouse while she angrily pulls up plants in her old garden. MIB/UnLocke/Smokey stops by for a visit. Trying to convince Sun that it would be a good idea to go with him because ZOMG JIN! Instead she freaks and runs somehow into a tree and waking up speaking only Korean. After Jack repeats some doctory jibberish to make himself feel important and useful, Richard comes back and instructs everyone to pack their bags because FIELD TRIP! They're going to destroy the plane. Sun gets upset because she wants to find Jin and leave the Island. Of course they don't know there's a submarine over there. Jack talks her into going with them and promises that she and Jin will leave the Island.

Flash Sideways
Jin and Sun aren't married. Silly us for assuming that. So how did he end up working for her father if he didn't start to win his approval so they could get married? She then seduces him - though he didn't look so unwilling - in her hotel room. And not for the first time. She proposes they run away together. Keamy comes knocking. He was the guy Jin was supposed to deliver the watch to. He wants the money customs confiscated at the airport. He brings in Patchy also known as Mikhail to translate the Korean for him. Only Sideways Patchy has both eyes. Sun offers to get th emoney from her own account. So Patchy goes with her to the bank while Jin goes to the restaurant and gets tied up in the walk-in by Keamy. Patchy and Sun walk into the restaurant to find the carnage Sayid left behind. Patchy and Jin get into a scuffle and Patchy once again loses an eye.

Month 4 Day 30

The wind has been ridiculous strong lately. On our way to Fort Worth this evening after work, we saw this flag straining against its ties. Like I said. Ridiculous strong.

Month 4 Day 28

Last night I went to a bachelorette party for a friend. All the girls got tiaras to wear. So today I thought it would be interesting to see how Cooper would look in a tiara. As it turns out, he looks quite natural.

Month 4 Day 26

Not quite sure what they were doing. I just know I had to take a picture.

Grey's Anatomy S6ep18

So we finally see what is behind Owen's PTSD. The helicopters coming in with wounded reminded me of M*A*S*H, which happens to be my favorite show. Only unlike M*A*S*H, there was nothing funny about the situation Owen found himself in trying to keep a man alive with only his hand.

As much as I dislike her, it was believable that Derek would get so busy with the chiefness that he wouldn't have time to share in Meredith's surgery milestones. They're a couple that are all about surgery. Derek was having trouble adapting to his responsibilities and duties of being chief but still getting to do what he loves which is surgery. So he stole Meredith's.

Awkward scene at lunch with the Chief standing there waiting to be asked to sit down. So why didn't they ask him to sit down? Too weird to eat with the guy who used to be your boss and is now kinda your equal. I guess I can get that. But manners still dictate that they ask him to sit down. And though it was funny to hear him try some locker room talk with the boys before surgery, it felt a little out of place. Like the writers were trying to cram too much into this episode.

I think we saw another step towards the end for Callie and Arizona which just makes me so sad. The baby thing is not going to go away. Nor is it something that you can compromise on. Not if one person wants a baby and one doesn't.

Mark and Teddy get it on. No surprise.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I shed more than a few tears at the end when the husband gave his wife the pills that would kill her. (Why can I never remember the names of the patients on this show?) That story was fantastic.

P.S. In case you haven't heard, Izzie will not be coming back to Seattle Grace.

Month 4 Day 25

I bought these shoes to go with the awesome black dress for our rehearsal dinner. I'm almost as excited to wear them as I am my Manolos and wedding dress.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

It's been requested that I give more of a description of my bachelorette night.

My mom, sister and I started with pedicures at the spa at the Gaylord Texan. After which we went back to the room and got ready.

The rest of the girls started showing up and after noshing on some cheese, fruit and these AMAZING sopapilla cheesecakes with some wine, it was time for the games my sister had planned: How Well Do You Know the Bachelorette? and Decorate the Panties game. I think the first one is self-explanatory. For the second game, white cotton panties and markers were passed around. The girls were instructed to decorate them and then I modeled each pair and we picked a winner - which I wore outside my jeans for pretty much the rest of the night. Some of my favorites:

  • I'll look better on the floor
  • [Front] The Honey Pot, [Back] Do Not Enter
  • Property of DF's Athletic Department

After dinner we headed to the Glass Cactus, the club at the Gaylord Texan. And then it was just drinking and dancing. During the band's breaks between sets, the club had dancers that dance up on stage or on a ledge behind the booths. At one point, one of the dancers invited me up to dance on the ledge with her. And of course I had to go. She had been turning away every other woman. So I danced on top of a table.

And then there were the two drunk guys in the shuttle on the way back to the hotel who tried to convince me not to get married.

All in all, a GREAT night. And no, I didn't get sick. Thankfully.

Once upon a time, we had this nice dog bed for Cooper. And then he decided to chew it to pieces. So now he drags these blankets back and forth from one room to the another so he has something to lie down on.

ANSWER - Tuesday Trivia: Geography

Which continent is the flattest?

Australia. According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the reason is "its position near the center of a tectonic plate, where there are no volcanic or other geologic forces of the type that raise the topography of other continents."

Month 4 Day 23

Etsy is my new favorite place to find jewelry, gifts, art, etc. It's where I found this necklace.

LOST S6ep9

The Beginning
Richard acts all pouty because he's not as in Jacob's circle as he thought he was. He pronounces everyone dead and that the Island is really Hell (which has to be the producers giving a little wink to a popular LOST theory). Hurley's off talking to someone and Jack thinks it's all about him, of course because that's what Jack does. Richard runs off into the jungle looking quite desperate.

Richard's on a horse! Racing across Tenerife Canary Island 1867 to get to his dying wife Isabella. After professing their love for each other, Richard - excuse me Ricardo - races back out to get the doctor who refuses to ride in the rain back with Ricardo but does offer him some expensive medication. Ricardo gives him everything, and it's still not enough. Distraught and terrified of losing Isabella, he struggles with the doctor who then falls and hits his head and dies. Ricardo runs out because he must get back to his wife and give her the medicine. Only he's too late. She's already dead.

They don't waste any time in arresting Ricardo. A priest visits him in jail where Ricardo is reading an English bible (having only spoken Spanish in his life before). He begs for absolution, but the priest tells him there's not time as they're going to hang him the next day for the doctor's murder. Only a merchant (I think) inspects him and and claims him as his property to sail to the New World.

The Black Rock (not a surprise but still nice to have that theory confirmed) gets caught in a storm and washes up on the Island and on its way into the jungle knocks into the four-toed statue. The merchant guy comes down and starts making shish kabobs out of his slaves because he's worried about them trying to kill him later if he frees them.

Just as he gets to Ricardo, there's Smokey wrecking his smoke-like chaos and bloody slaughter. He takes everyone except Ricardo who he scans, kind of like he did Locke (the real one) and Eko way back when. Ricardo's left alone on the ship, and then Isabella appears. Not sure if it's really Isabella or a Smokey manifestation or a food/water deprived hallucination. Whatever it is, Smokey shows up, and we're led to assume that he, well, eats her.

After passing out again, MIB wakes up Ricardo and offers him water, tells him the devil has his wife and offers him a deal (just like MIB/unLocke/Smokey has been doing with our Losties). Help me get off this Island and I'll help you get what you most deeply desire/want back: your wife. Ricardo agrees and MIB lets him out of the shackles and then repeats the line Locke said to Richard just a few episodes ago, "It's nice to see you out of those chains." A perfect matching delivery of that line. Creepy.

MIB starts talking about where to find and how to kill this devil (clearly he's talking about Jacob) giving him the same instructions Genghis Khan gave Sayid. Plunge this knife into him but don't let him speak otherwise it's too late. Was it the same knife? I couldn't remember. Ricardo is hesitant as he has morals and doesn't want to kill anyone. MIB the Manipulator reminds him of his wife and Ricardo reluctantly agrees to the mission. Only Jacob kicks his ass before Ricardo can plunge the knife in and tries to drown him so he'll realize he's not dead, that he's not in hell and in reality still very much alive. Then they have themselves a little chat.

Jacob explains that the Island is like a cork, keeping hell in and stopping it from corrupting the world. He admits to bringing people to the Island to show MIB that people are good and that their pasts don't matter. Except they keep dying because they choose their weaknesses. They argue about free will, and Jacob offers Ricardo a job as his representative. In payment Ricardo requests his wife (no can do), then absolution (again no can do) and then eternal life (DING DING DING!) and was subsequently granted immortality. MIB calls him a fool and tells him the offer still stands.

The End
Having stumbled in his faith, Richard digs up his wife's necklace that he buried all those years ago in his grief and starts screaming to MIB/UnLocke/Smokey that he's changed his mind and wants to take him up on his offer. Only Hurley comes walking out of the jungle and tells him that his wife Isabella sent him. Richard looks understandably shocked and confused. She talks to him through Hurley ala Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg in Ghost and tells him he is not at fault and that he's suffered enough basically releasing him. She also tells him that he can't let MIB leave the Island or they all go to hell (dun dun DUH!).

Jacob confronts MIB about the attempted murder. MIB begs to be let go. He really REALLY wants to leave the Island. And when Jacob refuses, MIB vows to find a way to kill him and anyone set to replace him.

Month 4 Day 22

I've been reading lately how important dental health is for dogs. So today I bought Cooper his own toothbrush and toothpaste (peanut butter flavor!). Haven't done a full brush yet. Today we just introduced the toothpaste so he would get used to it and my hand in his mouth. If only I could get him to stop licking my hand long enough to sit still for a brushing.

Yes, marriage is worth it and don't let anyone convince you otherwise

My bachelorette party was this weekend. I had such a blast. And part of what made it so fun was how everyone who saw me smiled and wished me congratulations. No one said, "Don't do it! It's not worth it!" That is until the end of the night.

In the shuttle from the club to the hotel, a couple guys noticed my bachelorette tiara and girl's night out sash and starting trying to convince me not to get married. According to them, all because their sex life is not what it was, or includes the activities of their single lives.

This kind of advice to a bachelorette is not new to me. I've been to many bachelorette parties where people, usually men, try to persuade the bride against marriage. And it always amazes me why people think it's a good idea to tell this to a woman who is clearly celebrating the upcoming change in her life.

It always brings down the party mood a bit and is frustrating that my choice to get married can't be respected by a stranger. I don't want to pass judgment on the state of the marriages of the two men I met. I am aware, and fully expect, our sex life to fluctuate. It happens in every long-term relationship regardless of whether or not the couple is married.

I also expect it to not always be easy. Like anything worth having in this life, it will take work and sometimes be difficult and sometimes be really, incredibly hard. I am aware and at the very least prepared that I do not know what will come or how I will handle it. But I do know I love DF. And I want to get married because I believe in our future. That we'll be great partners supporting each other through whatever comes at us. And though I am absolutely terrified of the trials we'll face, I can be a little bit braver and stand a little bit surer because I'll face it all with him by my side.

And to those two men, it is the love, the laughter, the smiles and the memories that we've already shared and those that we will share in the future that make marriage worth it.

Month 4 Day 21

Well, I survived the bachelorette night. When we woke up there was a little snow on the ground outside (which this cold and snow in March? I thought I moved back to Texas!). But it wasn't much.

Then I got home and saw how much snow there was there. A lot more than a little dusting.

And this afternoon we started our dance lessons. Here's DF with our instructor. He's got a ways to go but is already doing much better.

Month 4 Day 19

Just a few of the ducks out for a late Friday afternoon swim in the creek in our neighborhood.

Teenage Mortification

In an effort to prove to myself I can write a blog post on something besides the wedding, I thought I'd reach into my bag of memories and tell you a quick story that is rather quite infamous in my family.

Growing up my younger sister and I fought a lot. Especially when we were teenagers. You know. Normal teenage girl stuff. Stay out of my room, don't steal my clothes, etc. etc.

Once we were fighting very loudly, and my dad was fed up with us. So he told us, if we couldn't work it out, he would take all of our clothes, and he would pick out what clothes we wore every day for a week or two. And it wouldn't necessarily be a different outfit every day.

Well, to two teenage girls, that promise (my dad doesn't make threats; he makes promises) would have been equal to a death sentence for our social lives had we not changed our ways.

So we did. We got a lot quieter when we fought.

Thursday, March 18, 2010

Month 4 Day 18

We got a new grill for Christmas. Charcoal. (DF won that fight. Or rather I forfeited the argument of charcoal v. propane.) It only got put together last weekend because we finally had a weekend of gorgeous weather. DF is ridiculous excited about it.

I normally can hold somewhat intelligent conversations, I swear

Now that we are weeks - not months. That's right. WEEKS - away from the wedding, I find myself almost unable to think of anything else, which sometimes poses a problem during the day. This has been going on a while and is probably not going to get better for another 5-6 weeks at least.

I go over the to do list in my head making sure I'm not forgetting anything.

People ask how the wedding planning is going, and I have to remind myself that they may be asking to be polite and aren't really interested in hearing about how much I love the programs, or what decisions I've been having trouble making.

I keep waiting for the day no one talks to me because I can't hold a conversation about anything that's not wedding related.

Month 4 Day 17

We had hidden this blue squeaky toy only to forget where we had put it. It's been missing for months. But we weren't the ones to find it.

I had opened the TV cabinet to get a DVD, and Cooper got really excited and pushed his way in to grab the toy. And immediately started squeezing it so it would make its loud squeak for almost half an hour.

It didn't take me long to remember why we hid it from him.

LOST S6ep8

General MIB/UnLocke/Smokey
MIB/UnLocke/Smokey is full of revelations. First he reveals that the Big Bad Black Smoke killed all the people in the Temple. Then he reveals his true identity to Sawyer who clearly didn't have any clue as to who he really was and admits that he had to kill all the Temple peeps because it was either them or him. Then he orders Sawyer to go to Hydra Island to gather info on the people from the Aljira flight. (He can't mean Ilana can he as he knows where she is?) (And didn't he just tell Ben to meet them on Hydra Island last week? Was he trying to lead Ben into a trap that probably would have gotten him killed?)

Sayid's a zombie. Claire attacks Kate and starts screaming crazily about Kate taking her baby and MIB/UnLocke/Smokey intervenes and slaps, literally, some sense into Claire. Kate looks freaked. MIB/UnLocke/Smokey admits to Kate that he lied to Claire about who had her baby because she needed someone to hate. They have themselves a little chat on the beach where MIB/UnLocke/Smokey talks about his crazy mother. So Mr. Big Bad Evil had a mom. And she scarred him. At least he doesn't have daddy issues as it seems like everyone else on the Island does. (So who is his mom? Is Jacob his brother which could explain some amount of the hostility we've seen between them. Would go with the Cain and Abel theory I was reading about a few weeks ago.)

Sawyer finds the Aljira plane, a pile of dead people and a woman claiming to be the only one left. He doesn't quite trust her and eventually pulls his gun on her once again calling her con. And a group of people jump out of the bushes with more guns. They take him to Charles Widmore. Sawyer offers to bring him MIB/UnLocke/Smokey in exchange for passage off the Island. Only when he goes back he reveals all to MIB/UnLocke/Smokey and seems to pledge allegiance to him. Except he tells Kate he's going to let them deal with each other, and while they're busy, they'll hijack the sub. Which makes the most sense given Sawyer's history of looking out for numero uno.

Flash Sideways
I really started off incredibly concerned that Sawyer was going to be the exact same. A con man with a limited moral compass and severe daddy issues. Turns out he's a cop. And really good at undercover operations. Pun intended.

Some issues must remain because he was calling everyone in the phonebook with the name Anthony Cooper also known as John Locke's dad and the man Sawyer holds responsible for the deaths of his parents.

He goes on a blind date with Charlotte (a bit disappointed it wasn't Juliet) and charms the pants off her. Literally. Afterwards she finds a folder of information including old articles about Sawyer's parents' murder-suicide, and he flips out at her.

After punching a mirror when his partner Miles - oh they are loving their parallels between Island World and Sideways world - confronts him about the lies around Sawyer's trip to Australia, Sawyer watches some Little House on the Prairie (really? Sawyer watches this? I find that hard to believe), he feels bad for how he treated Charlotte and tries to apologize to her, but she will have none of it and slams the door in his face.

He's in the middle of telling all to Miles and admitting to wanting to kill Anthony Cooper when Kate runs into them and a chase ensues. Kate's clearly freaked out by and running from something. The marshal probably.

What We Learned
1. Widmore freaks out MIB/UnLocke/Smokey. I don't know if freaks out is the right word, but he knows it's another obstacle to getting off the Island and he doesn't seem too excited to be facing it.
2. MIB/UnLocke/Smokey can be killed. Don't know how. This isn't too much of a shock because Jacob was killed.
3. Thanks to a comment from Widmore to Sawyer about how little he knows, we're reminded that there's still a lot to learn about this Island and its bigger picture.
4. MIB/UnLocke/Smokey had a crazy mom who impacted him in a huge way. But then who's mom doesn't have a profound impact on them?
5. Sawyer still likes Watership Down in the Sideways World.

Month 4 Day 16

These flowers suddenly appeared in our backyard a couple weeks ago. We didn't plant them, and there were no signs of them when we moved in last June. I think they're quite pretty. And lovely to look at while our yard comes back from winter.

Month 4 Day 15

Earlier today I was reading on Martinis or Diaper Genies how to take the perfect somewhat pouty and slightly spoiled picture. Basically, you start to say the word "prune" and then take the picture.

Hm, looks more like I'm trying to make out with the camera. Guess I need to practice more.

The Next Chapter

It's less than six weeks before the wedding. And every time I let myself think about it, I mean really think about it, visualize it, imagine it, excited butterflies flutter their wings against the walls of my stomach.

I'm getting married. And it's becoming more and more real to me the closer we get to W Day, as it should.

Like most little girls, I looked forward to the day I would get married. I didn't seriously start to contemplate what it would look like until a couple of my high school friends got married, and then a few years later, my college friends.

But it wasn't the marriage I really wanted. It was the wedding. The beautiful white dress, a day to celebrate love and happiness, the fun with all the people I love most in the world. And let's be honest, all those presents.

Since I met DF and I started to seriously think about what my wedding (and then eventualy our wedding) would look like, I began to put some serious thought into what a wedding is.

Thanks to Disney and countless other movies and books, it's easy to think of a wedding as the end game. The ultimate perfect ending.

It's actually the opposite. It's a beginning. Not of life. But of a new chapter in my book of life.

And I cannot wait to turn that page with DF.

Month 4 Day 14

This afternoon DF and I met my parents at my sister's (and her husband's) place for a program putting together party. That is one big CHECK off of an item on the to do list. The list keeps getting shorter that I'm beginning to wonder more often what I'm forgetting. (I'm assured nothing, but still I wonder.)

I know it was my concept, but can I just say, I LOVE how they turned out.

Month 4 Day 13

Tonight we celebrated my sister's and my dad's birthdays with dinner and tickets to Phantom of the Opera, which is such a FANTASTIC show. Haunting, powerful music. LOVED it!

My sister holding up her proxy gifts for serving platters to match her china (they're on the way):

My dad holding up his card for a cheap jet ski. In case it's hard to see, that would be a can of beans and an inner tube, which if you know my father, is quite fitting and hilarious:

Trying to listen to the musical card over the noise in the restaurant:

Month 4 Day 12

IT'S SPRINGTIME! I was trying to get a picture of the gorgeous trees that line the entrance into my neighborhood. But it's kinda far away. White blossoms. It's GORGEOUS!

Grey's Anatomy S6ep17

So cute that Bailey is excited about her third date. Clearly it's been awhile since she's dated. She forgot about the third date and its necessary preparations on her "surgical field." Heartbreaking to see her breakdown and practically cry to Callie. Of course for Bailey that is tears. And I love how Ben gets that three dates is too soon for her.

I guess Teddy and Sloan make sense. Both the same age. Except she's still very much in love with Owen and not looking for anything serious which Mark, for once, actually is. I do not blame her for being swept off her feet by his speech at the end. Because he's always been great about the sweeping off of the feet. And now that he's focused on what most women want - a lifetime - he's even more charming.

Important career tips from Richard... apparently Derek is missing the vision to lead his surgeons in their own ways rather than in his way. It's true. A good leader empowers and encourages his team to do things their ways as he knows that's how people work best.

I think this episode was the beginning of the end for Arizona and Callie. I've never seen a relationship survive the compromise over the having or not of children. It's too big an issue.
Which makes me really sad as I LOVE the two of them together.

Grey's Anatomy Delayed

Sorry guys. I didn't have the time last night to watch Grey's Anatomy. I'll get the post up as soon as I can. Either later tonight or tomorrow sometime.

Month 4 Day 10

This is one of my quirks. I keep track of how often I wear my shoes. It started about 6 years ago. I mentally kept a running tab of how many times I wore a pair of boots as I wanted to make sure I got my money's worth out of them. There came a time when I couldn't keep track in my head so I switched to this system. Each Post-It includes the month and year the shoes were purchased and for what amount. Then the running tab. I know. I'm weird.

Month 4 Day 9

DF and Cooper doing the Bunny Hop.

LOST S6ep7

Through the Jungle to Grandmother's House aka the Beach
Miles reveals that Ben killed Jacob and Ilana is not so happy about it considering Jacob was the closest thing she had to a father. They go back to the beach where Frank tells Ben he was supposed to fly Oceanic 815. Ben notices that the Island still got him so his life wasn't that different. Then Ilana chains Ben to a tree and orders him to start digging his own grave. He tries to manipulate Miles into letting him go by offering him the $3.2 million Miles had asked him for a few season back. Miles laughs it off by reminding him of the $8 million in diamonds in Nikki and Paulo's graves. MIB/un-Locke/Smokey popped by for a visit with Ben while he dug and let him know that he wanted to leave the Island in his care when they left. (Question: If the Island isn't special like MIB/un-Locke/Smokey told Sawyer, why would he need to leave someone in charge when he leaves?) He releases him from the shackles and tells him there's a rifle by a tree and he can get there and kill Ilana before she has a chance to shoot him. He runs, she runs and he gets the gun and orders her to drop hers. They then have themselves a little chat where Ben explains why he killed Jacob (because he had sacrificed his daughter, the most important thing for Jacob and the Island, and Jacob didn't care). Ben says to MIB/un-Locke/Smokey because he's the only one that'll have him. Ilana says she'll have him, and Ben gets forgiveness and some acceptance that he's been craving. *tear* Which was clearly a surprise to him. They go back to the beach and Ben offers to help Sun with her shelter with no agenda or plan for manipulation. So odd for him. Then Jack, Hurley and Richard show up, and everyone is excited to see them, except for Ben who stands on the outside of the circle like a misfit. Maybe the Island is the Island of Misfit Toys. It's all great swooping music as people hug, shake hands and smile at each other. Until we see a scope of a submarine carrying Charles Widmore. Not really a shock since he's been trying to get to the Island in some way since at least Season 3. How he's going to play into all of this dead Jacob and MIB/un-Locke/Smokey drama is going to be interesting.

Oh and Miles did dig up the diamonds.

Through the Jungle to Grandmother's Boat aka the Black Rock
Jack wants to go back to the temple. Hurley is clearly trying to stall and keep Jack from going back. Probably on Jacob's orders. Richard comes popping out and Jack demands to know where he comes from. Richard promises to tell us but not yet (ARGH!) and leads them off into a different direction. They come to the Black Rock and Richard tells them that everyone at the Temple died. Jack did what Jack does and freaked out about what he couldn't change. Hurley admits that he can see and talk to Jacob and Richard tells him not to believe everything Jacob says. Which we could kinda guess from the Lighthouse episode. Then Richard tromps off into the big ship to get some dynamite so he can die. Jack asks him if he'd been there before. Richard remarks, "Yes, in all the time I spent on the Island this is the first time I've been back." Popular theory that Richard came to the Island on the Black Rock as a slave seems to be fairly accurate. Richard has lost faith in Jacob and his purpose in life thinking that everything Jacob said was a lie. But he can't kill himself because he was touched by Jacob and given a gift. (or according to him a curse) (some of our Losties were touched by Jacob. Does that mean they have the same gift from Jacob? Or is it a different gift?) But Jack could light the fuse for him and then he could die. So Jack lights it and instead of getting the eff out of dodge sits down and demands Richard to start talking. Jack shows a surprising amount of faith for a man of science by trusting that he's not going to die even though the dynamite's fuse is burning.

Flash Sideways
Ben teaches his students about Napoleon and his devastating loss of power when he was exiled to Island Elba. A not so thinly veiled metaphor (or is it allegory? whatevs) for Ben's Island story. Ben laments to Doc Arzt (Hai Arzt!) about the administrative principal not doing what's best for the students. Substitute Locke suggests he become the principal as he clearly cares way more about them and the school than the current guy. Also probably a parallel for how Ben came into Other Power after Charles Widmore.

Ben takes care of his sick Dad and their relationship doesn't appear to be nearly as strained as it was in Island reality. Ben has still been to the Island. His dad reveals that he took him to the Island for a better life. But for some reason they didn't stay. Alex shows up asking for extra history lessons (she is one of his star history students). Did NOT expect to see her there.

In private lessons Alex admits to seeing the principal have sex with the nurse. You could see Ben's wheels turning as he tried to figure out a way to use this against the principal to gain power but also keep his promise to Alex of not telling anyone else.

He confronts the principal who then turns it back on him saying you must choose... your ambition for the power and position of principal or your favorite student Alex and her promising future. Similar to the Island or your daughter choice Keamey gave him in Season 4. Only this time he chose right and put Alex over himself.

What We Learned
1. Widmore is coming to the Island via sub.
2. All Ben wanted was a little love and acceptance. He could have been a nice guy all this time if he had just been shown a little bit of love.

Book Review: Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford

Disclosure: No one paid me in any way, form or fashion to do this review.

This story is centered around Henry, a Chinese boy torn between two cultures, faced with decisions to honor his upbringing or do what he feels is right in his heart. The narrative unfolds between two times, 1942 and 1986, as you learn the importance of a hotel and the treasures it holds to Henry.

It's a sweet tale. Also educational if you knew very little of the Japanese internment camps the U.S. government forced Japanese-Americans in (American citizens mind you) during World War II. I doubt the portrayal of the camps is completely accurate. But for not having known anything about those camps, I found it interesting.

Henry during the 1942 parts when he was 12 years old seemed mature for his age. He didn't react to a lot of things the way you would expect a 12 year old to. But the moral conflict with his dad which repeated with his son in 1986 was engaging.

This was a light, easy read that was charming and a little educational. Not a great work of literature by any means. A woman from my book club mentioned that it would be better on a shelf for teens. I would probably agree with her on that.

Month 4 Day 7

Some of you may remember this photo from the last round of daily photos:

I had Cooper in my lap today, which reminded me of this picture from seven months ago. It's not as easy getting him up there as it was last time. He's put on a few pounds and grown like a foot.

Now when he's on my lap there's no avoiding the licks on my face. 70 pounds of sweetness.

Month 4 Day 6

He had such a big day. A run. Then a trip to the vet for some nail trimming and anal gland expressing (it's as gross as it sounds). No wonder he needs a nap.

Month 4 Day 5

A regular sight in our house... DF playing video games.

Grey's Anatomy S6ep16

Seeing Cristina embarrass herself in front of a surgical hero was quite hilarious. Harper Avery is a bit full of himself though. Of course anyone that has a prestigious award like that named after him probably has a bit of an ego.

Lungs inflating without being part of the body system are creepy. That was unnerving.

Mark is back to being true to form and sleeping with anything and everything that will have him - which doesn't really limit it much. And then Callie put him in his place. Which she is really good at. Only for it to be unraveled by the realization that Alex and Lexie are still having the sex.

Lexie and Alex. Not so much a one night stand. I get it. They've both had their hearts broken. A little horizontal therapy. Best way to deal with it? Eh, probably not. But for these surgeons it's an easy decision.

It's a bit awkward to watch Owen and Teddy try to be friends again. Sweet but awkward.

Month 4 Day 4

New shoes! I know. It's a shock. I had been lusting after this pair for months. Last week I cam across them on sale for 40% off. I had to buy them. Naturally. They are gorgeous.

Month 4 Day 3

Invitations get mailed on Friday! They've been stuffed almost ready to go since December. They just needed to be sealed.

Which is what we spent much of tonight doing. Now all that remains to be done with the invitations is to stick them in the mailbox. And then the next seven weeks will go by in a blur I'm sure. Oh holy crap.

Month 4 Day 2

There's this restaurant called Sweet Tomatoes (apparently in some states it's called Souplantation). It is one of my favorites. A huge salad bar. 8 soups. Baked potatoes and baked sweet potatoes. Pastas. Fresh, AMAZING breads. Oh, it's so very yummy. And I will use just about any and every reason to go eat there.

Every month they have a premier ingredient that they use in several dishes or a couple dishes that are the highlight of the month. And March is grilled cheese focaccia:

Also known as heaven in food form. I've actually described it to DF as a foodgasm. Yes, it's THAT GOOD.

I would pull a PeeWee Herman and marry it if I could (anyone remember when he married the fruit salad? For some reason that episode is what I remember of that show.). DF was feeling a bit threatened, but I assured him it's only a foodgasm and no real threat.

LOST S6ep6

At the Temple
Sayid and Genghis Khan get into a fight and Genghis Khan tells Sayid to get the eff out. Until Claire walks in and tells Genghis that MIB/unLocke/Smokey demands to see him. He refuses then begs Sayid to come with him. Then begs Sayid to kill the EVIL INCARNATE.

He leaves the Temple runs into Kate - who goes back into the Temple and finds out Claire came in and gets all excited - and then runs into MIB/unLocke/Smokey and stabs him in the chest as instructed by Genghis Khan. Sayid is quick on the uptake and realizes that MIB/unLocke/Smokey wants something from him. To deliver a message. MIB/unLocke/Smokey offers him anything and everything in the world (sounds like the devil's bargain) and Sayid admits that all he ever wanted was Nadia.

Message: Jacob's dead. MIB/unLocke/Smokey is leaving the Island for good and everyone is welcome to join. And those that don't WILL DIE.

Sayid and Genghis Khan have a heart to hear where Genghis Khan reveals that he got drunk, caused an accident and killed his son. And that Jacob then offered to revive his son if Genghis Khan comes to the Island. Sayid not really moved by this speech drowns Genghis Khan who it turns out was the only thing keeping MIB/unLocke/Smokey out. And sure enough, in comes Smokey into the Temple in a smokey, murderous rampage. Miles escapes with Ilana, Sun, Frank and Ben - who suddenly appear in the Temple.

Determined to save Claire, Kate's stuck with crazy Claire, stabby Sayid and the undead unLocke who she is shocked to learn is not dead. Although she doesn't realize yet that he's not really Locke.

Flash Sideways
Sayid and Nadia are still clearly in love except she's married to his brother - man those two must not be meant for each other because there are always obstacles. His brother borrowed money to expand his business and is being threatened with violence if he doesn't return. And of course he goes to the torturer for help. Sayid refuses. His brother gets beaten up and ends up in the hospital. Sayid starts to run off for vengeance and Nadia begs him not to.

Some goons pick up Sayid and take him to a kitchen where he meets Keamey (sp? Remember him?! The crazy guy from the freighter who shot Ben's daughter Alex? Yeah that lunatic.) Turns out he's the one Sayid's brother borrowed money from. Sayid shoots him and his goons and then discovers Jin in the walk in. Huh? How did he get there?

What We Learned
  1. Sayid still has a bit of a murderous rage no matter what reality he's in
  2. Kate is in big trouble
  3. Genghis Khan held some sort of power over Smokey

How old was golfing phenom Tiger Woods when he hit his first hole in one?

Month 4 Day 1

It's back... daily photo! Every day for the month of March, I will post a picture (or several) that I took that day.

(I must be crazy to attempt this when I've got less than two months until the wedding. Oh well. Go big or go home.)

This is the look Cooper gets when he wants to get up on the bed. It usually ends with him jumping up on the bed, and me yelling at him to get down.

The Scariest Moment

There's something I've never mentioned here before (I think). DF is a diabetic. He was diagnosed with Type I diabetes at the age of 2. He does a great job of managing it and doesn't need me nagging him.

So, I do what I can to leave him alone to his good management skills. Except for the times when his blood sugar goes low over night. Don't get me wrong. He's a grown man who before I came along handled his overnight lows just fine.

But now when it happens, I jump out of bed to grab juice or a sugared Coke to help raise his blood sugar quickly and calm his twitching because I don't want him to fall and hit his head while he tries to get to the kitchen (which he has done before).

And usually that juice or Coke is all it takes for him to come out of the low enough for him to get to the kitchen to get what else he needs to sustain his blood sugar for the rest of the night. Friday night, however, was different.

He had no clue as to what was going on, he was disoriented, and he could barely form sentences. It was terrifying. After 45 minutes, he finally came out of it enough that he could tell things weren't right. Which was when he requested I call an ambulance. So I did.

Six wonderful firefighter paramedics showed up at our house. And by that time, DF was completely himself again. They tested his blood sugar (which was still really low at this point) and gave him a gel and sugar water to raise it. And after it reached a level they were okay with, they left.

He's good now. I just have to remember that we're not telling his mom about the ambulance. No need to worry her.
