Pushing Daisies S2ep7
I missed about half of this episode as my cable kept cutting out. So all I have to say about this show is that I am going to miss it. The quirkiness. The deep characters and dark plots. It is a brilliant show. With brilliant set designs. You know if Nielsen did a better job, ABC would know that people actually watch it. Oh well. I do have LOST starting in January to console myself.

New Shoes

And finally, the good news...
I have been offered, and I've accepted, a job!!! I know I haven't given a lot of details surrounding my situation. That is because this blog never was, and never will be, about my job. But because a job is part of my life I felt you deserved to hear the great news.
Thank you to everyone who has prayed or sent out good thoughts for me. It is much appreciated.
Especially thank you to DBF who has put up with me randomly bursting into tears and freaking out at him for no apparent reason. And thank you to my family and friends who have been so supportive during this difficult time.
So the job...
I'm to be the marketing coordinator for a CPA firm. The firm is small but has plans for growth and is nearby which means my commute will be very short. I am very excited about this position and opportunity.
And now I can finally open that bottle of wine. And it tastes as sweet as I remember.

Bad news
The sad truth was announced today. ABC decided not to order any more episodes of Pushing Daisies. They also decided not to continue with Dirty Sexy Money and Eli Stone. I watch all of these shows but the loss of Pushing Daisies is the hardest to accept.
Grey's Anatomy S5ep8
Mutilation. Performing surgery on someone who does not need it is mutilation. I cannot believe Lexie and the other interns thought it would be a good idea. They're not supposed to be doing surgeries yet. Sure their residents should be teaching them sutures and starting an IV line and other similar stuff. But doing a surgery when their residents haven't even done a solo surgery yet is complete stupidity.
Izzie had sex with Dead Denny who is likely a ghost in corporeal form. Still don't understand why Denny's back. And I still don't care. I just love that he's back.
I do love how Alex said I can deal with crazy. But you're going to have to be the one to do the breaking up because I'm not going anywhere. Alex is growing. It's so nice to see him be a good guy rather than the ass he usually is.
George has finally had his eyes opened and knows that Lexie is in love with him. Question is will he return the feelings. Right now, it doesn't look that way. But maybe he'll start to see her differently.
Miranda is having a bit of a crisis of faith it would seem. She loves her job. But she has realized she's not feeling the passion she used to. The passion that she is seeing in her residents and their interns. I wonder what this means for her.
There seems to be a lot of tension between Cristina and Meredith this season. Perhaps Cristina was used to being Meredith's personal therapist if you will. And now that she is on her way to be whole and happy thanks to Derek and Dr. Wyatt, Cristina is not feeling as needed. And probably a little jealous. And on top of all this comes in Sadie. Who knows a part of Meredith Cristina doesn't. And who is the Pre-Cristina Cristina. So their all-out yellfest is understandable. As far as who was right, it's not a clear cut situation. I think they both had valid points.
Loved how Owen who couldn't find the words through the whole episode ends up on Cristina's stoop and tells her she's beautiful. You could see her soften just a little.

Pushing Daisies S2ep6
What's interesting about Ned and his brothers is that they went through almost exact same situations (wait, did the twins' mom die too and I missed that fact somehow? If so, then it really is almost exactly the same). Yet the twins are clearly looking for a father figure. First in the Great Hermann and now in Ned. But Ned has no father figure. And while the twins have embraced the very hobby their dad introduced them to, Ned gets heartburn at the thought of it. So why the difference? Perhaps it's just the difference in their personalities. Or maybe it's more rooted in Ned's gift. After all, even with parents, Ned would be isolated by his gift. So naturally when he basically became orphaned he didn't feel the need to seek out a father figure.
Emerson hates magic. That makes sense. He's a private detective. His job is to look for clues and figure out the puzzle. Naturally he'd scoff at anything that appears to be something it isn't.
I'm still not sure I understand why Olive seems to have accepted that Chuck is pretending to be dead and has gone along with the whole charade. Maybe it's just because they're such close friends. It takes a close friend to have your conversation with your mother who you didn't know was your mother since you can't see her as she thinks you're dead.
So we know what Dwight Dickson is after... a pocketwatch. And Ned's father has one as well. What we don't know is why he wants these watches. Clearly he's willing to go to great lengths to get them. Together do they make up a key that unlocks great treasure? Or perhaps each watch holds one third of a map or code to great treasure. Whatever it is, I'm betting that it's wealth Dickson is really after.

Grey's Anatomy S5ep7
I know I am so late in posting. Went to my grandparents' house over the weekend and have been so behind playing catch up since I got back. I will try to keep it short though.
So sweet that Meredith is concerned about Lexie. Maybe she'll actually start having more of a relationship with her.
LOVE that Cristina was feeling displaced by Sadie. Now she understands how Derek feels when she kicks him out of bed with Meredith.
It is so understandable that Callie was suppressing every thing she was feeling about being left behind by Erica. And if anyone could understand it would be Cristina. When she freaked out in the OR and Mark and Cristina kicked everyone out so she could have a private moment, you know that girl is going to be okay. That she's not alone.
DENNY'S BACK!! OMG I LOVE that Denny is back!!!!! I don't care that it doesn't make sense. I don't care that it's probably not for long. But every second he is on the screen, I am LOVING it!

Six Things

My 6 Things:
- When I empty the dishwasher, I put the just cleaned dishes in the bottom or back of the cabinet pushing the ones that are already in there towards the front so they're the first used. I guess my philosophy for this is that every dish is being equally used. Same thing when I put away laundry.
- I'm born and raised a Texan and have lived here most of my life. Except for the two fantastic years I spent in Boston going to graduate school. Those two years taught me so much about myself and life. Though I love Texas and can't imagine living anywhere else (well actually I can but I don't because this is family, this is home), part of me misses Boston so much that at times it takes my breath away thinking about it.
- The pinkie finger on my right hand doesn't lay flat. When I place my hand on a table or other flat surface, my pinkie finger makes a sort of peak. I can push it down to lay flat, but as soon as I release it, it pops back up.
- I've changed more tires than just about everyone I know. Seriously, at least 12. And 4 of those in the past year. Of course the upside of this is that I can change my own tire in under 15 minutes.
- I still have all my Belle dolls, porcelain figures and other stuffed characters from the movie Beauty and the Beast. I can't seem to make myself give them away as Beauty and the Beast is still one of my all-time favorite movies.
- I knew how to line dance by the age of 10. When I was little, I danced. Ballet, tap, jazz, clogging. And we'd often be asked to perform at various festivals, fairs, nursing homes, etc around the city. Our studio had a standing engagement every Thursday night at a country western bar. And groups were assigned a certain Thursday a month. With my mom, sister, brother and I all dancing, we often spent at least 2 Thursdays a month - often 3 - at this bar. After we'd perform, there would be line dancing and we often stayed for a song or two. So now whenever Boot Scootin' Boogie plays at a wedding or whatnot, you will find my sister, brother and me on the dance floor doing what we learned way back when.

Grey's Anatomy S5ep6
In case you haven't heard the news, tonight was Erica's (Brooke Smith) last episode. The company line - according to a response from executive producer Shonda Rhimes - is "we did not find that the magic and chemistry with Brooke's character would sustain in the long run." I know she is not the most beloved of all Grey's characters. But I for one will miss her and the way she challenged Cristina. (Of course now Major Hunk will be challenging Cristina.) After last week's "I can see the leaves" speech, Erica was finally showing some signs of life, of passion, outside of medicine. Oh well.
Freaking hilarious how the Chief was voicing Stan. I was laughing so hard because he was laughing so hard.
Bouquet of corpses. Awesome. I may stop complaining how DBF hardly ever brings me flowers because I could get something worse. Like a bouquet of corpses. (Well not really because DBF doesn't have that kind of access but still. He could find some dead hobos for a bouquet of corpses.)
Meredith's mother's journals are of surgery. And not her life. Interesting. Well surgery was her life so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. I was thinking Meredith would end up with more scars from her mother by reading those journals. Maybe not. Especially if they're all medical and she's actually learning stuff from them. Then again, it only takes one page of personal to cause scars.
I'm not surprised Derek played the "you slept with my wife so you owe me this favor" card. Poor Mark. He's not used to rejection. But did he honestly think Cristina would be interested in him? If that happened that would be the moment this show jumps the shark. Cristina is a single malt scotch, for the right kind of man. Mark Sloan is definitely not the right kind of man. But it's looking like Major Hunk may fulfill that role.
The old married couple. Wow. Incredible to have that kind of love that is still so powerful after so many years together. And so so so sad when he walked out of the hospital by himself.
Owen's right. The residents don't have respect. They're so concerned with winning and getting ahead that they bicker and fight for patients and procedures. This is of course not news to us as they've been this way from the very first episode. But to a man that was taught respect in the army - and probably at home - it's a shock. Cristina may have become a doctor because of the car accident that killed her dad. But I think she loses her compassion more often than she has it.
And go Lexie for standing up to Cristina and saying you're not teaching us! You're not doing your job! Cristina did show some signs of leadership at the end of last season. But apparently she's lost that as well.
Izzie's story arc with the stolen heart has come full circle. She thought she had come to grips with what happened but as soon as she realized who the patient was, her guilt came crashing and flooding in. I was glad to see her struggle (and glad to see Erica punish her by making her stay on the case). And I was glad to see her step up and help the patient breathe through the procedure.
Denny came back! Thank you Shonda! I LOVE Denny! And I love how they manage to bring him back sporadically for an episode here and there in a way that completely makes sense. And I hope they continue to find ways to bring him back. As I do love seeing him.

Book Review: The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz
Oscar Wao is a Dominican-American. Sweet and romantic, he's also overweight and a nerd. And by nerd I mean the kind that is majorly into sci-fi, fantasy, Dungeons and Dragons, and the like - not just a casual fan. This of course does not help him with the ladies.
By the title of this book you would think the story would be told with Oscar as the narrator or at the very least, be all about him. I guess in a way it is. The narrator is actually a friend of Oscar's sister who becomes a friend of Oscar's as well. And the story gives the background for the curse that haunts Oscar and his family by switching between the stories of the people in his family... his sister Lola, his mother Beli, his grandfather Abelard. We even get a little of the narrator's own story as it relates to Oscar.
What was a bit shocking to me when I first started reading this book was the use of racial slurs and language that seemed a bit crass. Of course after a while, I became absorbed in the book and it no longer bothered me as it became a natural part of the story. Another thing to note is that the narrator (or author if you will) often throws in a sentence in Spanish throughout his story. Most of the time I could figure out what was being said (or at the very least the tone) given the context but it would have been helpful if I knew Spanish or had a Spanish-English dictionary.
The story itself was very good. Oscar is the boy in school who didn't have many friends and would develop intense crushes on one girl after another, never to actually "get the girl." He wanted to be better liked, to have more friends and also a girlfriend. But he could never figure out how to do it. But you don't stop cheering for him. That one of these girls will see the heart of gold that resides within the nerd. And you hope that he'll be able to break the family's curse and get his happy ending.

Although Jackson won the popular vote, Adams was declared the winner after the election was thrown into the House of Representatives because no candidate had a majority of the electoral vote.

Just last week I was reading a post over at Jenny, The Bloggess' site in which I learned several new vocab words like spermophile and the difference between pederast and pedant and that pretty much any word starting with "ped-" sounds like a synonym for pedophile.
Then just a couple hours later, I pick up my book to continue reading. And there on the very page where I left the story is pederast. Gah! How did Jenny know that I would need to know what a pederast is just in time for reading this book? It is creepy I tell you. But helpful. Now I'm just waiting for the Internets to tell me about investing a million bucks - or something along those lines - so that the next day a check arrives.

Grey's Anatomy S5ep5
Major Hunk is intense. I LOVE it! And what was even better were the faces of Mark and Derek when he didn't give them the ego and attitude they expected. But rather showed why he is a great doctor. Not just his abilities. But his humbleness and knowledge that he doesn't know everything. Just awesome!
Wow. That initial scene with Erica and Callie was incredible. And you could just see Callie getting more and more scared the more leaves Erica saw. Then in true Erica fashion, she shut down her emotion at the rejection and become a cold-hearted bitch to everyone else, especially Bailey.
It was kinda weird to see an episode of Grey's when Meredith is actually happy and laughing rather than miserable and whining. If she keeps this up, I might actually grow to like her a little more. Of course, with the amount of her mom's diaries they found at the end, that's not likely to happen.
Mark does have a lot to offer. More than just sex - though I wouldn't turn it down ;-) I'm glad to see someone besides Derek become his friend.
I would have walked out if I had been told under no circumstances was I to let those pigs die only at the end of the day be told to then kill them. I see what Hunk was saying as far as the pain they would endure if they were kept alive. But I don't know if I would have been able to put them out of their misery the way Cristina did.
Cristina may have been insisting at the beginning of this episode that she's not getting involved with another attending but she sure took it personally when Hunk pretended not to remember her. Can't wait to see what's going to happen with them.
Finally. Alex has a doctor he can related to. Hunk is tough. He knows trauma. And he's good at it. But since he recognizes that he's not perfect and that he needs to learn, Alex has finally learned that it's okay to ask to be taught. And so he asks Izzie to teach him how to be in a couple. LOVED IT!
