On what major U.S. construction project did workers first wear hard hats?


The Hoover Dam, which was started in 1933. Because of the danger of falling rocks and dropped tools, workers began making their own "hard-boiled hats" by coating cloth hats with coal tar. Their effectiveness convinced the contractors to have hard hats manufactured commercially for the workers
