So I had a pretty uneventful weekend. But a couple things really stood out:
1. IKEA - This was like my 3rd or 4th time at IKEA in Frisco. And it's always crowded and I usually have to park at the far reaches of the parking lot. Well, Saturday I go to pick up some minor essentials and I spend 10 minutes driving around trying to find a parking spot in the main lot. 10 MINUTES! People were parking in the dirt lot; they were parking in the far reaches of the Dr. Pepper Park lot (the part closest to IKEA). Wow. My guess: kids going off to college and their parents all decided to go to IKEA Saturday for those dorm essentials. And let me tell you....they kept getting in my way.
2. Harry Potter book club - So as most of you know, I am a devoted JK Rowling and Harry Potter fan. I discuss some of my theories here on my blog as well as read many online. Oh, and I also keep tabs via podcasts. But I had really wanted to discuss my theories and hear other people's theories in person. So when I found a Harry Potter book club nearby I was stoked and couldn't wait for the first meeting I could attend. Let's just say, I'm not as hard core as the people in this group I met with yesterday. They didn't dress up for the meeting. But they have HP parties where costumes are required. Two of them had recently returned from a HP Fan Tour, which sounded kinda cool until I looked it up and realized it was $2300 excluding train and plain tickets!!! One girl brought two Snape dolls that she had made with her because she's obsessed with our favorite Potions master. I have no problem with people getting that into a subject like HP, I sorted myself to see what House I'd be in, maybe someday I'll get a t-shirt or something, but that hardcore devotion, it's just not me.
I'm interested in your thoughts on cult fandom like this... (also think Star Trek, Star Wars)
